What is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is a branch of optometry that focuses on the adaptation of contact lenses specifically designed to modify the curvature of the cornea in order to correct myopia, astigmatism, presbyopia, and hyperopia. For this, a previous study must be carried out with appropriate instrumentation to determine its viability.

Orthokeratology is an ideal alternative for those who seek perfect vision throughout the day without the need for glasses or contact lenses. It is especially recommended for children and young people, as various studies have shown that it reduces the progression of myopia, which helps prevent common eye diseases associated with high myopia. It is also an excellent option for people with corneas that are too thin for refractive surgery.

Athletes, especially swimmers, also benefit from this treatment, as it provides them with great freedom by not having to worry about glasses or contact lenses while performing their activities. In addition, for those who cannot or do not want to undergo surgery, orthokeratology is a very attractive alternative.

It is important to note that in some cases, orthokeratology is the only alternative for those who need to pass visual tests for job positions or other requirements that require perfect vision. In short, orthokeratology is a very interesting and safe option to improve the quality of life of those who seek optimal vision in their day-to-day life.

In our center, the adaptation of overnight orthokeratology lenses begins with a personalized feasibility study for each patient. This includes a thorough evaluation of visual efficacy, corneal and tear state, a retina exam, corneal topographies, and an initial trial with the first lenses.

If the feasibility study shows that the treatment is suitable, the patient begins to use the lenses at night. The effects of overnight orthokeratology can be noticed from the first night, although it is necessary for the patient to use the lenses for three to seven consecutive nights for vision to normalize.

During the first weeks of treatment, periodic check-ups are carried out, and the lenses are changed as necessary to achieve optimal graduation and clear and sharp vision. The duration of the treatment will depend on the patient’s type of graduation and their individual response to the treatment.

Overnight orthokeratology is an effective alternative for correcting myopia, astigmatism, hyperopia, and in some cases, post-LASIK vision. At AMATI ÓPTICA CLÍNICA, we can treat myopia of up to 8 diopters or more, as long as the feasibility evaluation indicates that the patient is a suitable candidate for the treatment.

If you are interested in overnight orthokeratology, we invite you to schedule a consultation at our center so that we can evaluate your case and determine if this treatment is suitable for you.

At Amati Óptica Clínica, we pride ourselves on offering our patients the best possible care. We make sure to stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and technologies in the field of orthokeratology, and we have the necessary equipment to perform precise and safe adaptations.

In addition, we value the importance of working in collaboration with different providers to offer our patients a wide variety of overnight orthokeratology lens options and find the most suitable solution for each individual case.
